EQL Work Based Diploma
These qualifications are completely different from obtaining a BHS exam, which you apply to take on a specific date and on the day you either pass or fail. With work based diplomas you are assessed on a continuous basis whilst at your place of work. A portfolio of work has to be produced which does require assignments in each section. The riding options are similar to the Stage Exams. There are other optional units such as ‘Trekking’, ‘Preparing the Performance Horse’ etc. These are the core of the Apprentice programmes and you must attend the centre one day per week to complete this certificate.
Level 1
“This qualification is available to candidates over the age of 14 years and specifically aimed at those between the age of 14 – 19 years. Candidates over the age of 19 years may be looking to re-train and develop basic skills in horse care to provide an alternative career.
This qualification will offer the learner a sound foundation which will provide them with the knowledge and skills to progress into employment and future learning and development. Holders of this qualification should be able to obtain work as a groom and yard worker on any equine establishment as they should possess the skills and knowledge required to care for horses under supervision and to carry out general stable management routines.
Competence at this level will involve candidates demonstrating skills and applying knowledge that they are able to carry out a basic range of routine tasks related to the care and use of horses under supervision. Assessment is carried out through continuous assessment at the candidate’s place of work or at an approved assessment site.
The qualification is made up of 10 practical units and 10 principle units, covering the knowledge-based elements of the practical delivery. When credited to candidates, these will be a valuable guide to their ability to carry out a particular task in a stable yard or stud. It is desirable that candidates should obtain the majority of their training and assessment in the workplace. There are also 4 additional units, which do not form part of the qualification but are available to candidates who have an interest in achieving some basic riding units.”

Level 2
“This qualification is primarily for candidates aged 16 plus, however it is also suitable for competent and more advanced 14 – 16 year olds as it lends itself well into the remit for schools to be able to offer more vocationally based awards. Candidates over the age of 19 years may be looking to re-train and further develop their skills and knowledge at this level to enable career progression or entry into employment.
The qualification entitles the holder to carry out skills in horse care under limited supervision, providing the opportunity to progress learning skills and knowledge following on from Level 1. Learners will be able to safely and efficiently demonstrate skills and apply their knowledge through a range of work activities and routine tasks related to the care and use of horses under limited supervision.
On achieving this qualification candidates can further their training and competence by progressing onto a Level 3 qualification. It will allow progression to further learning, including specialist learning for the Diploma in Environmental and Land Based Studies or as part of the Equine Apprenticeship. Holders of this qualification should be able to obtain work as a groom in a variety of job roles on any equine establishment and will provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to progress their career.”
